Cuban Efforts to Protect Ozone Layer Recognized
Havana, Jan 8 (acn) The Secretariat of the Protocol of Montreal has
recognized the efforts made by Cuba in the protection of the ozone
layer, said on Monday Jose Antonio Diaz, Cuban Deputy Minister of
Science, Technology and the Environment (CITMA).
Diaz noted that, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of this
international agreement, Cuba - and particularly its Ozone Technical
Office - received the recognition for its constant efforts in the
reduction of substances that deplete the ozone layer.
During a meeting with reporters on Monday, executives from CITMA
commented on the impact of science on economy and society as it is
reflected in the results obtained in sectors like biolotechnology,
energy, agriculture and fishing.
The pentavalent vaccine, the Citoprot-P for the cicatrization of the
diabetic foot and the HRT monoclonal antibody are only a few samples.
Diaz added that pollution has been reduced in the mountainous regions
of the island while woods continue to grow with almost 25% of the
country's surface covered by forests.
